There are several important things to consider when pricing drain fields. Below are some pointers to help you make an informed decision.

Does the price you are quoted include sand?

If so, how much, and how much is extra sand. Quality sand is paramount in drain field longevity. Poor quality or an insufficient amount of sand and you could be in for premature drain field failure. Trying to save money on sand will cost you in the long run.

What type of system is installed?

Rock and gravel is proven and tough but the new multi pipe systems are the best alternative in our opinion. Other systems may be cheaper but not last as long.

Area Placement

Try to keep your drain field in a open area with mainly grass covering the onsite system. Keep your drain field away from roof run off. Also try to keep plants with invasive roots away from the drain field or install a root barrier.

Ground Saturation

Keep sprinklers from saturating the area directly above your drain field. Evapotranspiration from grass is best at dispersing water from your system.

Activity Over the Drain field

Never, Ever, drive over the drain field or septic tank with anything. If necessary put up fencing to prevent inadvertent damage caused by large animals or vehicles.

What size should my drain field be?

Size is very important! An oversize drain field will always serve you better.

Think Ahead for Future Use

If you are considering adding on to your house or establishment it is much better to plan ahead with drain field tank and size rather than replace a good working system should your addition be required by the Health Department.
